Poet Kumarsen Samarth and actress wife Shobhna had four children, and their eldest daughter Nutan was born on 4th June 1936. At the age of just 14, Nutan started her career as an actress in the film Hamari Beti in the year 1950.

However, the movie that bought actress Nutan to the limelight was Seema for which she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award. She then played the lead role opposite the megastar Dev Anand in the movie Paying Guest. The songs ”Chod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega” and “Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahi” from the film are listed as evergreen. In the year 1959, Nutan acted in two blockbusters, Anari and Sujata.

Throughout the ’60s and ’70s, Nutan gave her fans a streak of successful movies like Chhalia, Saraswatichandra, Devi and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki. The songs from these movies were also appreciated by the audience and are heard even today.

Her pairing with Dev Anand was accepted by the audience in the best way, and they went on to do four films together namely, Paying Guest, Baarish, Manzil and Tere Ghar K Samne. In 1963, Bimal Roy cast Nutan for the film Bandini. Nutan’s acting in the film is still today regarded as one of the finest performances ever in Hindi Cinema. The film won the Filmfare Best Film award and is also included in Anupama Chopra’s “The 20 Best Hindi Films Ever Made.” Nutan’s expressive acting for an understated role made her actress as par as the male lead. The grace and passion that Nutan offered on-screen became the highlight of her career.

Nutan’s affair with Filmfare continued, and she won her fourth award for the movie Milan and a sixth nomination for Saudagar released in 1973 opposite Amitabh Bachchan. After that, it was the year 1978 when Nutan made a surprise comeback with Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki. She again won a Filmfare award and became a record holder for winning the five best actress awards at the Filmfare. She continued her successful run and starred in some exceptionally successful films like Saajan Ki Saheli, Meri Jung, Naam and Karma.

Karma received a lot of gratitude from her lovers as they admired her pairing with Dilip Kumar for the very first time. Nutan’s last film was Kanoon Apna Apna released in 1989.

Songs like “Ae Mere Humsafar”, ”Dum Dum Diga Diga”, “Ek Ghar Banaunga” are some of her songs that are known to be favorites of old Hindi song lovers.
