Sukhwinder Singh is an internationally acclaimed Indian playback singer who mostly works in Bollywood. He has sung some of the most famous Bollywood songs like Jai Ho from the movie Slumdog Millionaire which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, and Other visual media.

Born on the 18th of July 1971 to a Bhatti family in Amritsar, Punjab, where he grew up. Sukhwinder Singh released his first album titled “Munda Southall Da” with T-Singh joined the famous South Indian musician laxmikanth-Pyarelal’s troupe, and became a music arranger before heading to south India to find more work.  

He made his first Bollywood break with the song “Aaja Sanam” in the film Khilaaf. Unfortunately, the song went widely unnoticed and Sukhwinder Singh realized that his voice lacked something and he went on to take a sabbatical and tour part of America and England and learned, see, and understand their various forms of music. After broadening his musical knowledge, Sukhwinder Singh came back to India to kick-start his musical career. 

His first big break came with the song Chaiyaa Chaiyaa from the film Dil Se where A R Rahman used Sukhwinder Singh as a playback singer. The song gained immense popularity, so much so that the song is popular even decades after it’s released and has gotten quite international recognition. 

Sukhwinder Singh has worked quite a bit for Shahrukh Khan movies. He did seven songs for Shahrukh Khan in total, mainly Chaiya Chaiya from the movie Dil Se, Dard-E-Disco from Om Shanti Om, Chakh De India from Chak De India, Haule Haule from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Marjaani from Billu, Satakali from Happy New Year, and Udi Udi Jaye from Raees. All these songs have become certified hits and have garnered quite a popularity. 

Some of Sukhwinder Singh’s songs include; Chaiya Chaiya, Hai Hai Mirchi, Dhoom Dhoom Luck Luck, Rang De, Ghanan Ghanan, Maahi Ve, Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo, Lagan Lagi, Who Kisna Hai, Nach Baliye, Bunty Aur Babli, Bijuriya, Katra Katra, Jhoom Barabar, Jogi Mahi, Samay Ka Pahiya, Bunku Bhaiya, Fashion ka Jalwa, Jai Ho, Dua, Hud Hud Daabang, Dum Dum, Banjaara, Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola, Gallan Goodiyaan, amongst others. 

Sukhwinder Singh won two Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for his song Chaiya Chaiya from the movie Dil Se and for the song Haule Haule of movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. In 2010 his song Jai Ho from the movie Slumdog Millionaire won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, and Other visual media. He has also been awarded National Film Awards for Best Playback Singers at the 62nd National Film Awards for his rendition of the film Haider (2014), composed by Vishal Bhardwaj. And he won Golden Sparrow for Best Male Playback, India’s 1st Diorama International Film Festival, and Market for his song Kar Har Maidan Fateh from the movie Sanju.
