P. Jayachandran was born in ‘Bhadralayam’, Ravipuram, Ernakulam, but later moved to Irinjalakkuda with his family. His father, Ravivarma Kochaniyan Thampuran of the Cochin Royal Family, was an accomplished musician but not a professional singer. Jayachandran’s mother, Subhadra Kunjamma, was a great music lover who encouraged singer Jayachandran to learn the notes of Mridangam at a young age. With her help, he became proficient with the Mridangam. He married Lalitha from Thrissur in May 1973; their two children are Lakshmi (b. 1975) & Dinanath (b. 1981). Both are happily married now, and there is at least one grandchild.

Singer Jayachandran did his graduation from Christ College, Irinjalakuda. While a student at the Irinjalakuda National School, Singer Jayachandran won many prestigious prizes for playing the Mridangam and light music at the State School Youth Festival. He met Yesudas at the state youth festival in 1958. In the same year, Yesudas won the award for Best Classical Singer, and Jayachandran won the award for Best Mridangist. He has one National Award, four Kerala State Awards, and four Tamil Nadu State Awards. He recorded Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi. He was also lovingly called Bhava Gayakan. Singer Jayachandran sang the song Anuragaganam pole composed by M.S. Bhuraj for the film Udhyogastha directed by P. Venu. Eventually, P. Venu and Jayachandran produced more hits such as Ninmaniarayile C.I.D. Nazir (1971) and Malayala Bashathan Prethangalude Thaazhvazha (1973). Another Kerala State Award followed in 1978 for Ragam Sreeragam from the film Bandhanam, written by M. B. Sreenivasan. He received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1985 for the P. Jayachandran song Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho from the film Sree Narayana Guru, composed by G. Devarajan. The song Prayam Nammil in the film Niram earned singer Jayachandran a third Kerala state award. In 1975, he wrote a song by Velli, then Kinnam Pol for the Malayalam movie Penpada (with music by R. K. Shekhar). It was considered his first composition as a 9-year-old. R. Rahman.

It was the year 1985 that released Naaney Raaja Naaney Mandhiri, “Vaalkaiye Vesham” (from the 1979 release Aarilirundhu Arubathu Varai), “Poova Eduthu Oru” (from the 1986 release Amman Kovil Kizhakaaley), and “Thaalaattudhey Vaanam” (from the 1981 release Kadal Meengal). His performance in the song Kathazham Kattuvazhi for the movie Kizhakku Cheemayile, composed by A. R. Rahman. The Tamil Nadu government honored singer Jayachandran with the 1997 Kalaimamani award for his contribution to Tamil film music.
