Asha Bhosle, a legendary playback singer in the history of Hindi Cinema has gifted her voice to more than a thousand Bollywood movies. She is also very popular for her several private albums and solo concerts performed in India and abroad.

Born on 8th September 1933; Asha Bhosle is the younger sister of the icon Lata Mangeshkarji. After their father’s death, both the Mangeshkar sisters moved to Mumbai and started singing and acting in films to support their family. In the year 1943 Asha Tai sang her first song “Chala Chala Nav Bala” for a Marathi film Majha Bal. Her journey in Bollywood began in 1948 when she sang the song “Saawan Aaya” for Hansraj Behl’s Chunariya. Her first solo Hindi song was for the film Raat Ki Raani released in 1949.

Throughout the 1950s, Asha Bhosle sang more songs than any other playback singer in Bollywood.

Her voice and the composition of Sajjad Hussain for Sangdil (1952) gained a fair amount of recognition. After this film director, Bimal Roy gave Asha Bhosle a chance to sing in Parineeta and Raj Kapoor signed her to sing the iconic song “Nanhe Munne Bachche” with the great Mohd.Rafi. These songs did great and Asha Bhosle received even more popularity.

Her voice paired with the voice of Mohd.Rafi Sahab for songs like “Maang Ke Saath Tumhara.” “Saathi Haath Badhana” and “Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri” were massive hits. The song “Aaja Aaja” which was one of R.D Burman’s first soundtracks was taken as a challenge by Ashaji and she delivered it in just 10 days of rehearsals. Other songs from the Rafi-Asha duo like “O Haseena Zulfon Wali” and “O Mere Sona Re” also became very popular.

Asha Tai is known as one of the most versatile female voices in the Industry. Throughout her singing career which lasted for an exceptional six decades, Asha Bhosle has partnered with some of the best music directors like O.P Nayyar, Khayyam, Ravi, Sachin Dev Burman, Pancham Da, Ilaiyaraaja and A.R Rahman. Not just Hindi, Asha Bhosle sang in over twenty Indian and foreign languages. Her work is spread across different genres of music like film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, Indian Classical Music, folk songs and Rabindra sangeets.
