K.S. Ravikumar's Thenali had an interesting starcast featuring Kamal Haasan, Jayaram, Jyothika and Devyani. A remake of the Hollywood film 'What About Bob?', the soundtrack was composed by A.R. Rahman. Kamal approached K.S. Ravikumar after the success of his Rajinikanth starrer Padayappa, and the entire script was completed in less than four months. To get the accent of a Sri Lankan Tamil right, Kamal Haasan took lessons from TV host Abdul Hameed. A Hindi remake with SRK was also planned but the project never took shape. Thenali completed a 175-day-run across Tamil Nadu, and the ensuing celebrations were graced by none other than Superstar Rajinikanth himself.
