Mohammed Rafi the person was as unique as Mohammed Rafi the singer. Famously generous, he never quoted a price to his producers and sometimes sang for an amount as low as one rupee. A fan of K.L. Saigal, the singer got the blessings of his guru during a concert when Rafi was asked to fill in before Saigal. On hearing him sing, Saigal predicted that Rafi would be a great singer one day. Despite singing a huge number of duets, Rafi and Lata's equation soured over the royalty issue as he was on the producers' side. When Rafi died on July 31, 1980, the entire city ground to a halt and his funeral procession had a crowd of over 10000. He sang his last song just a few days before his death for a Laxmikant-Pyarelal score.
