Maanga is a sci-fi comedy about an aspiring scientist's ambitions. The film was in the news for actor Premgi's dual role, in which one of the characters was from the 1950s. The theme track Genius Maanga was sung by Ranjith, and the music was composed by Premgi himself. In fact, Premgi began his career as an assistant to Yuvan Shankar Raja, and would mainly sing the rap portions in the latter's albums. Premgi made his acting debut in 2006 in a supporting role and gradually progressed to lead roles. Son of musician Gangai Amaran and the younger brother of film director and actor Venkat Prabhu, Premgi's extended family comprises Ilaiyaraaja, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karthik Raja and Bhavatharini.
