Like many singers of his generation, Mukesh was deeply influenced by K.L. Saigal. In fact, such was the impact of Saigal's voice, that in some songs it is impossible to distinguish the two. Legend has it that when K.L. Saigal heard the song Dil Jalta Hai, he could not recollect having sung it. Later he was told that it was Mukesh's voice. Eventually of course, Mukesh developed his own style and left a lasting impression on the minds of listeners. While the masses loved his sad songs, Mukesh was also distinctly melodious when singing bhajans. The calmness in his voice added to the mood, as heard in bhajans such as Prabhi Ka Naam and Prem Ki Ganga.
