Padmabhushan Manna Dey sang over 4000 songs in a career spanning over five decades. He lent his voice to songs in almost every Indian language, but a majority of his work was in Hindi and Bengali. Manna Dey got his first break in 1943 as a replacement for K.C. Dey. Manna Dey had the gift of versatility, to the extent that he could sing classical as well as pop songs with equal ease. At the peak of his career he sang close to a 100 songs in a year.
