Biography

Gulzar is an eminent film-maker playwright and Hindi and Urdu poet and lyricist.

In his youth Gulzar went through many hardships and had to struggle and try his hand at several things before making his mark as a poet of repute. His knowledge of Hindi Punjabi and Urdu along with several dialects like Marwari and Bhojpuri imparted a highly nuanced and pan-Indian aspect to his poetry from the

very beginning of the career.

Gulzar started his journey as a lyricist with two of the most eminent film-makers of his time - Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Later he collaborated with music director R. D. Burman and the two worked together in films as well as individual albums. This period in the poet�s life is considered to be of the most intense creativity.

Gulzar was one of the first to introduce a decisively modern ring to the lyrics of Hindi film songs. Whereas his contemporaries and many of their predecessors saturated their poems with pastoral yearnings or words inspired by Radha Krishna love lore Gulzar�s lyrics were crisp nuanced and more quotidian.

Although Gulzar�s output in the capacity of a film-maker or scriptwriter is less than as a lyricist he is considered to be a director who could effectively blur the demarcation between mainstream and art films. His early works were weighted with some socio-political import but gradually Gulzar�s concerns have become more personal biographical and human. The film Aandhi a poetic disapproval of Indian polity was banned for a time due to the explicit resemblance of the central character with Indira Gandhi and its oblique criticism of the imposition of Emergency. He has a flair for adapting stories from literature and classic films and Indianizing them. His film Angoor is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors and Parichay is a successful adaptation of the Hollywood classic The Sound of Music. He has also directed a television serial in 1988 on Mirza Ghalib starring Naseeruddin Shah.

Gulzar is also the author of books on poetry a book of short stories and a dozen books for children. A story book for children Ekta received an award from the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) in 1989.
