Biography

Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao had music in his genes as his father was an itinerant singer of Narayan Teertha�s tarangs and also played the mridangam. It was but natural for Ghantasala to start his training under him. However his father�s untimely death put an end to this tutelage. But luck was on his side. He ended up being tutored by Paatrayani Seetarama Sastry of Salur. His guru taught him with a

great deal of love and care and within no time Ghantasala became an expert in Carnatic vocal music.

Ghantasala graduated with flying colours and returned home to make a living by singing at weddings festivals and other occasions. But this was not enough to make two ends meet and he formed the idea of starting his own traditional drama troupe. It was while dabbling in theatre and music that he was inspired by the nationalist fervour of patriotic revolutionaries and joined the Quit India movement. However his political and nationalist activities proved to be short lived. He was jailed for two years and after his release he gave up politics for good.

Ghantasala got married to Savitri of Pedapulivarru soon after his release and this seemed to change his luck because in his wife�s village he met the man who would change his destiny. Samudrala Raghavacharya introduced him to the film industry in Madras.

He started his career in 1944 by doing bit roles and singing as part of the chorus. However he didn�t have to wait too long as he was noticed by C. Krishnaveni in Yogi Vemana in 1947. She immediately took him under her wing and he got his first break as a composer with Manadesam in 1946. The same year saw the release of Keelugurram which established Ghantasala as one of the best singer-composers of Telugu music. Ghantasala produced some excellent music for films like Shavukaru (1950) Chiranjeevulu (1956) and Rahasyam (1976).

Ghantasala the man with the �most majestic voice� was made the Singer Laureate of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam a coveted honorary post. A postage stamp has been issued in his honour.

He passed away in 1974
