Biography

Vani Jayaram a veteran playback singer for Indian cinema born the fifth daughter in a family of six daughters and three sons was considered a child prodigy. She was trained in Carnatic music by Kadalur Srinivasa Iyengar T. R. Balasubramanian and R. S. Mani. Later she was taught Hindustani light classical music by Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan.

From her earliest years she secretly cherished the dream

of becoming a playback singer. She was able to realize this wish only after her marriage to Jayaram when the couple relocated to Mumbai. In the 1970s she was noticed by music director Vasant Desai who chose her to sing for the film Guddi. Three of the songs she sang for that film became great hits.

But she became really popular thanks to the song �Bol re papi hara� a semi-classical number based on the Hindustani raga Miyan Malhar her superb rendition of which brought her nationwide fame.

In 1973 she made her debut in Tamil cinema with the film Thaiyum Seiyum. She sang in Meera where the music was scored by Pt Ravi Shankar. For her performance in the Telugu film Shankarabharanam she got her second National Award as Best Playback Singer.

In her illustrious career as a playback singer Vani Jayaram has worked in several regional language films. Besides Hindi and Tamil she has lent her voice to several films in Gujarati Marathi Marwari Hariyanvi Malayalam Kannada Telugu Oriya Bengali and Tulu. Her work has been rewarded with some of the most prestigious awards for vernacular language films.

In 1975 she received the President�s National Award for Best Female Playback singer for her work in the Tamil film Aboorva Ragangal.
