Biography

Unni Menon a famous playback singer in Malayalam Tamil and Telugu films did not go through a rigorous training in classical vocal music; he was a gifted singer from childhood. During his college and university days he would participate in various youth festivals and competitions. Later he started taking lessons from Dr. S Ramanathan and continued his musical education under Babu Shankar Nayveli Santanagopalan

and Jayachandran.

Along with Sujatha Mohan he started his career under Ilaiyaraaja�s unit. The first playback number that he sang was a Tamil song �Amudham teetym� that was actually supposed to be sung by Yesudas. A decisive break in his career came when he sang the song �Puthuvellai mazahi� in Mani Ratnam�s Roja.

In a career spanning over 20 years he has sung almost 500 playback songs. Besides film songs Unni Menon is equally famous for his devotional and light music. A great admirer of A. R. Rahman especially of his technical expertise and his taste for the unconventional Menon has worked with almost every major music director like Vidyasagar Ilaiyaraaja and Mani Sharma. In an interview he has also mentioned that Ilaiyaraaja is a disciplinarian who tolerates little or no deviation from the notes of his composition while A. R. Rahman likes to give enough freedom to the singer to improvise. As a listener Unni Menon listens to a variety of genres and styles of music. He prefers to listen to ghazals at night. He is a great admirer of ghazal artistes like Jagjit Singh Yesudas Hariharan and Ghulam Ali.

In 1987 Unni Menon opened a recording studio in Kochi called Alaap. In a highly competitive music industry the studio did well and inspired by its business success Unni opened another studio The Sound of Music in 1997 in Chennai. He started his career in the days of live recording and has witnessed many of the changes and advancements that shaped the recording industry.
