Biography

In 1978 Udit Narayan earned a scholarship and eventually moved to Mumbai. For a span of six years he was trained in Indian classical music at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. In playback singing he made his debut with the film Unees Bees (1980) under the baton of Rajesh Roshan. Even though he sang a duet with Mohammed Rafi this film did not give him a big break. Udit Narayan became famous overnight when

he lent his voice to the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). Apart from bringing him his first Filmfare Best Singer Award the film turned out to be a major musical hit. It also marked a turning point in fellow playback singer Alka Yagnik�s career.

In the years to follow Udit sang in a number of Aamir Khan films like Dil Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) etc. At the same time he continued to sing often for Nepali cinema. In the 90s Udit Narayan sang some of his most memorable numbers like �Mujhe neend na aaye� (Dil - 1990) �Humne ghar chhoda hai� (Dil -1990) �Koyel si teri boli� (Beta - 1991) �Dhak dhak karne laga� (Beta - 1991) �Ruk ja o dil deewane� (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge - 1995) �Kya kare kya na kare� (Rangeela - 1995) and �Pardesi pardesi� (Raja Hindustani - 1996).

But throughout the early 90s Udit was overshadowed by Kumar Sanu who remained the more popular singer. A decisive break came with the movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) which brought him his second Filmfare Award. For the next ten years he worked with almost every major music director of the industry like Anu Malik Jatin Lalit A. R Rahman Nadeem Shravan Rajesh Roshan Shankar Mahadevan etc. Veteran singers like Lata Mangeshkar Asha Bhosle and Pankaj Udhas have all expressed their admiration for the singer. In the latter part of his career he sang his most popular numbers in Shahrukh Khan movies like Darr Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Dil To Pagal Hai Mohabbatein Swades Veer Zaara etc.
