Biography

This Light Classical singer was born into a family steeped in Classical music. Her mother Menekabai Shirodkar was a professional dancer and trained vocalist. So it was but natural that young Shobha follow in her footsteps.

Even though Shobha started her training at home under her mother in no time she was ready for more professional help. She started training under Ustad Ghammam Khan and Ustad

Nathan Khan. These exponents taught her the finer nuances of Light Classical music. Along with these greats her father-in-law Pandit Narayan Nath Gurtu also trained her. She was also very influenced by Begum Akhtar and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

This extensive and in depth training in classical music helped Shobha in her pursuit of light classical music. Her singing was considered to be the perfect marriage of talent and soul. She was equally at home with thumri dadra hori kajri and chaiti. Her effortless style and ease with all these forms made her performances popular. Shobha was equally dexterous in ghazal bhajan and Marathi natya sangeet. She was also a popular playback singer for Hindi and Marathi films.

Shobha Gurtu died on 27 September 2004 following a cardiac arrest. Her son Trilok Gurtu a well known percussionist in his own right has kept the musical legacy going.
