Biography

S.D.Burman was from the royal family of Tripura. He initially trained in classical music under his father sitar player and dhrupad singer Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman and later under K. C. Dey Ustads Badal Khan and Allauddin Khan and Bhishmadev Chattopadhyay. His music showed the influence of east Bengali and Northeastern folk music.

Young Sachin started his career as a singer of folk and

light classical music and also composed music for radio in Bengal. Sachin Karta as he was known to the music aficionados of Kolkata was an excellent sitar flute and tabla player. He performed in various musical conferences in Allahabad and Kolkata with the likes of Abdul Karim KhanUstad Fayyaz Khan and Girija Shankar Chakrabarty. This man of many talents was also good at sculpting besides being an outstanding sportsman (especially at tennis football volleyball).

As a singer he made his debut in the film Sanjher Pidim (1935). He made his debut as a music director in the film Rajgee (1937). To try his fortune in film music he moved to Bombay in 1944 and began with Filmistan's Shikari (1946) which achieved moderate success. His real breakthrough came the following year with the film Do Bhai particularly for the song �Mera sundar sapna beet gaya� sung by Geeta Dutt. From then on Sachin Dev Burman teamed with two of the major film personalities of his day Dev Anand and Guru Dutt.

With Dev Anand�s Navketan Productions he created musical hits like Taxi Driver (1954) Munimji (1955) Paying Guest (1957) Nau Do Gyarah (1957) and Kalapani (1958). Guru Dutt�s masterpieces in the late 50s and early 60s belonged to two broad genres: romantic comedy and sombre melodrama. S.D Burman excelled in both these genres in such unforgettable Guru Dutt classics like Baazi Jaal (1952) Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz ke Phool (1959).

The Dev Anand - S.D.Burman collaboration continued to turn out musical hits like Bambai Ka Babu (1960) Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) Teen Deviyan (1965) Guide (1965) and Jewel Thief (1967). Due to health problems his career slumped a bit during the 60s but he came back in the 70s with such classic films as Sharmilee (1971) Abhimaan (1973) Chupke Chupke (1973) Zameer (1974) and Mili (1975).

Sachin Dev Burman�s musical orientation in the folk songs of the Bhatiali Sari and Dhamail tradition left a discernible mark on his music. At that time in the Bombay film industry the trend was that lyrics were set to tune by the music directors. SD changed that. In his working style the tune came first and then the lyrics. Today nine out of ten songs are composed in this manner.

A stream of melancholy flows through some of his compositions. Generally his style consisted of flourishing melody coupled with graceful restraint in orchestral embellishment. The wide variety of his compositions made him work with almost all the major playback singers of his day. His thin expressive voice was often used as bardic commentary in a film.

He died on 31 October 1975 in Bombay.
