Biography

Born into a middle class family as a child Mohammed Rafi's musical gift was so evident that his older brother Janab Hamid Sahab decided to put precious resources into providing him with the training and support needed for a career in music.

At the age of seven Rafi started studying Hindustani classical music under the renowned Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Waheed Khan. His career can be said

to have begun when he was 20 with a Punjabi song released on 28 February 1944. The producer Sham Sundarji impressed by his singing booked him for all his future films. He made an impact as a singer with 'Tera khilona toota balak' in Anmol Ghari (1946).

Nasir a well-known actor at the time invited Rafi to Bombay. This proved to be a turning point. Sham Sundarji's production Gaon ki Gori for which Rafi sang was a great hit and Rafi was well established as a playback singer by 1948. When Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated Rafi's touching rendition of 'Suno suno ay duniya walon Bapu ki yeh amar kahani' written by Rajinder Krishan with music by Hanslal Bhagatram was a huge success.

One of Rafi's most successful musical partnerships was with music director Naushad. His first song for Naushad was 'Hindustan ke hum hain Hindustan hai hamara' for the film Pehle Aap and the two of them went on to deliver great songs in films such as Baiju Bawra and Mere Mehboob. Another successful creative relationship was with S. D. Burman with whom he worked in movies such as Kaagaz Ke Phool Guide and Pyaasa. In the early 70s with a change in the image of the Hindi film hero he found himself eclipsed by Kishore Kumar but made a comeback with two big hits later in the decade Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin and Amar Akbar Anthony. He passed away on 31 July 1980.
