Biography

Kishore Kumar's original name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His father Kunjilal Ganguly was a lawyer. His mother Gouri Devi came from a well-off family. The young Abhas had two brothers - Ashok Kumar the eldest and Anoop Kumar - and a sister Sati Devi. Ashok Kumar became a film actor when Kishore was still a child and Anoop soon followed suit. As a result Kishore developed a keen interest in the movies

and this grew into an obsession with K. L. Saigal the legendary actor-singer whose records he would save his pocket money to buy.

Kishore followed his brothers to Bombay the city of cinema. Keen on singing he found success as an actor instead although he is on record as having tried hard to ruin his acting career only to find himself becoming more and more popular as a comedian!

Kishore Kumar may not have received any formal training as a singer but he was hugely talented and capable of imitating his idols� singing styles perfectly. He developed a penchant for yodelling a skill he apparently picked up from several records brought back from Austria by Anoop. He soon became popular for his robust and vigorous voice quality and yodelling was an intrinsic part of it.Kishore became a favourite singer with S.D.Burman and his son R.D.Burman in his turn a very successful music director. Khemchand Prakash was another composer who thought highly of Kishore. Soon all the leading composers discovered his talent and began using his voice for their songs. Although the 60s were a lean patch for him from the 70s onwards he came into his own and soon he dominated the film music scene overshadowing the other male playback singers of the time.

With a strong interest in composing as well it seems that Kishore played a leading role in introducing electronic instruments into Hindi film music scores. He was married to four beautiful and talented women: Ruma Guha Thakurta Madhubala Yogeeta Bali and Leena Chandavarkar to whom he was still married when he passed away in October 1987.
