Biography

Kannadasan was one of the most eminent Tamil poets of the 20th century and a major lyricist in Tamil cinema.

The most fascinating thing about his poetry was that the poet�s individual experience of different sides of life was transformed into highly inspired verse. As a non-conformist who did not believe in conventional morality he is said have indulged himself in everything: women wine drugs

and gambling. For a while he led an ascetic�s life in a religious sanctuary. After having seen life in all its different aspects he started putting his experiences into rhyme and prose that had a certain self-deprecating quality.

Kannadasan�s verse appealed to people from every walk of life from school boys to collegians housewives farmers manual labourers or plantation workers. Even those unable to read or write could appreciate his art through the lyrics he composed for Tamil films.

Interestingly Kannadasan was a staunch atheist and a follower of the Dravidian atheistic movement. But at one stage of his life he chanced to go through Thiruppavai of Andal. He was so impressed by its inherent mysticism that it restored his faith in Hinduism. He took the name Kannadasan and started writing essays on Hinduism.

Before his death on October 16 1981 he was honoured as a Poet Laureate.
