Biography

Javed Akhtar the famous Urdu poet lyricist and scriptwriter is the son of Jan Nissar and Safia Akhtar.

Javed's was a literary family. His grandfather Muzter Khairabadi was a veteran Urdu poet and his maternal uncle Majaz also wrote some of the finest verses in Urdu. Due to the nature of his profession his father had to shuttle between Lucknow and Bombay so Javed and his brother spent most

of their childhood with relatives. He was initially admitted to a well-known school of Lucknow. After his mother�s death he moved to Aligarh to live with his maternal aunt. He did his matriculation from Aligarh Muslim University and completed his graduation in Arts from Safia college Bhopal.

In 1964 he arrived in Bombay and started earning his living writing scripts for minor films and occasionally working as a directorial assistant. Around the late 60s he met Salim Khan and the two decided to work together as scriptwriters.

They turned out to be the most prolific scriptwriter team in that era of Bollywood. They made their debut with the film Andaaz and followed it up with hits like Seeta Aur Geeta and Haathi Mera Saathi but their real success came with Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer (1973) also a turning point in Amitabh Bachchan's acting career. The duo that churned out scripts for such mega hits like Deewar Sholay and Shakti worked together for the last time in Saagar.

From that time onwards Javed Akhtar focused exclusively on writing lyrics. All the songs of R. D. Burman's final film 1942: A Love Story were penned by him. In the late 80s and 90s Javed Akhtar became the most sought after lyricist due to Tezaab and Mr India. He has also written songs for recent films like Kisna Bose:The Forgotten Hero Mangal Pandey: The Rising Dil Jo Bhi Kahey Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Don.

After getting divorced from his first wife Honey Irani he married Shabana Azmi the renowned actress and daughter of the poet Kaifi Azmi.
