Biography

�Yeh raat yeh chaandni phir kahan/Sun jaa dil ki daastan� - the voice of the romantic Dev Anand singing his heart out was that of a young singer Hemant Kumar whose deep sonorous voice and lilting melodies enthralled generations.

He started his singing career in 1933 at the age of 13 when he appeared on radio. His first recorded Bengali (nonfilm) album was released in 1937: Janite Jodi Go Tumi.

His first song as a singer in a film was in the Bengali Nimai Sanyasi released in 1940.

Surprisingly till then he had never seriously considered a career in music. Instead he enrolled in a four-year course at the Engineering College at Jadavpur Polytechnic. Six years later he made his first gramophone record for HMV. Recognition soon followed in the elite music circle of India. In 1940 he sang his first Hindi geet �Kitna dukh bhulaya tumne�. But commercial success was yet to come.

However a talented composer-singer like him cannot go long unrecognized. In 1948 the firebrand lyricist-music composer Salil Chowdhury teamed up with him and a new genre was born - the kavya-geeti - a ballad with meaningful lyrics. It was an immediate hit. To this day a song like �Gayer Bodhu� remains the symbol of a once-prosperous rural Bengal and �Ranar� of a lost tradition of postmen.

Soon Hemant received offers from the Bombay film industry. He sang his first Hindi film song in 1944 for Amarnath in the movie Iraada. He became a well known singer in Hindi with �Ye raat ye chaandni� from Guru Dutt's Jaal (1952) picturised on Dev Anand at the seashore. He collaborated extensively with Dutt and scored the classic songs of Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam. Thereafter it was a plethora of hits in quick succession - Jaal Nagin Anarkali Solva Saal Baat ek Raat Ki Bees Saal Baad Khamoshi Anupama to name just a few.

His first Hindi hit as a composer is Nagin (1954) in which he adapted a tune from Bijon Bhattacharya's play Jivan Kanya for the snake dance number �Man dole� a milestone in the use of electronics in Hindi film music. In 1955 he received the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for Nagin; and the distinctive snake-charmer�s tune is now a widely used motif.

Despite his popularity as a Hindi film playback singer Hemant Kumar remained closely linked with West Bengal. He is still one of the most popular Rabindra Sangeet singers. He started under the tutelage of Anadi Dastidar and initially sang mainly in the tradition of Pankaj Mullick. However the period between 1949 and 1952 had a decisive influence on him. When he began collaborating with Salil Chowdhury who was associated with the Indian People�s Theatrical Association (IPTA) he too became an active member of the organisation.

Although he went on to become one of the most popular and important Bengali and Hindi composers (he composed for Tarun Majumdar and Mrinal Sen) it was his playback singing particularly for Uttam Kumar that produced one hit after another. His baritone was a key ingredient of the star�s romantic dramas - witness classic hits like �Jhor uthechhe� in Sudhir Mukherjee�s Shapmochan; �Nir chhoto khati nei� in Niren Lahiri�s Indrani; �Ei path jadi na shesh hoi� in Ajoy Kar�s Saptapadi.

He also made a contribution as a film producer. He produced Mrinal Sen's Neel Akasher Neechey. As producer he often worked with set designer-turned-director Biren Nag producing successful thrillers like Bees Saal Baad adapted from Conan Doyle�s The Hound of the Baskervilles and Kohraa borrowed from Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and Hitchcock. He also produced Pinaki Mukherjee's Faraar Tarun Majumdar's Rahgir and Asit Sen's psychodrama Khamoshi. His autobiography Amar gaaner swaralipi came out in 1988 the year before he died.

Hemanta Mukherjee passed away on 26 September 1989 leaving behind a legacy of over 2000 recorded songs music scored for about 150 Bengali and 50 Hindi films and a brief stint of film direction under his home banner Geetanjali Productions.
