Biography

Hariharan the renowned Indian playback singer was born to late H. A. S Mani and Srimati Alamelu.

His parentage played an important role in shaping his musical talent. Both his parents were renowned Carnatic vocalists and Hariharan took his initial training from them. His exposure to Hindustani classical music from an early age made him adept at singing ghazals and geets. Ustad Ghulam Mustafa

Khan trained him in Hindustani classical music. In his teens he developed a passion for ghazals mainly from listening to Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh.

In 1977 a major breakthrough came his way: he won the top prize in the All-India Sur Singaar competition and was signed on by music director Jaidev to sing for the Hindi film Gaman. Eventually his professional career as a singer took off.

At the outset of his career he concentrated on stage shows and sang frequently for television serials. He also started recording his own ghazal albums for which he wrote the scores as well. His debut ghazal album Abshaar-e-Ghazal with Asha Bhosle fetched a gold disc and received much critical acclaim. Next came Gulfam another outstanding ghazal album.

Hariharan's association with director Mani Ratnam and music director A. R Rahman goes back a long away. In 1992 he sang the song �Thamizha thamizha� in the original Tamil version of the film Roja.
