Biography

Anu Malik a popular Bollywood composer is the son of veteran composer Sardar Malik.

Anu made his debut in film music with the film Poonam (1981). During his early years he worked as a music director exclusively for F. C. Mehra�s Eagle Films composing for films like Sohni Mahiwal Ganga Jamuna and Saraswati and but did not get the break he desired. Around the same period he also

composed music for films like Mard Maalamaal Love Marriage Aasman Jaal and Allah Rakha.

His luck turned with the film Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee (1993). The relative success of the music of this film was repeated in Jaanam and Sir but for a wider claim to fame he had to wait till Baazigar was released. He won his first Filmfare Award for this film.

Although a successful composer by this time his music was considered derivative. Anu Malik proved his originality as a composer in the films Border and Refugee - this film earned him a National Award. Anu Malik has left the indelible mark of his genius on films like Aks Fiza Filhal and Mujhe Kuch Kehena hai.

From the very outset Anu Malik had a fondness for struggling newcomers. When Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan were the reigning playback artistes in the industry he experimented with newcomers like Sonu Niigaam and KK. Later he worked with eminent singers like S. P. Balasubramaniam Chitra and Alisha Chinai. Another characteristic feature of Anu Malik�s individual albums is that he does not collaborate with any one lyricist but has songs written by a host of lyricists.

Like R. D. Burman Anu Malik has an unusual style of singing that finds unique expression in playback for stars like Salman Khan Akshay Kumar and Shahid Kapoor. Some of the hit songs in his own voice include �Ek garam chaye ki pyali� �Gori gori� and �Meri jane jigar� and they show that he has improved as a singer. Apart from singing an entire song song he has often lent his voice in chorus in songs like �Mehbooba mehbooba� (Ajnabi) or �Tumse milke dila ka� (Tumse Milke Dila Ka). Some of the best known songs from his solo albums include �Dekho baarish ho rahi hai� �Tera chehra� and �Dhua dhua�.
