Biography

Alka Yagnik's mother Shubha Yagnik is a Hindustani classical singer. Her father was also a trained classical singer but Alka acknowledges that behind her success lie her mother�s unfulfilled ambition and drive to see her daughter succeed.

Alka�s talent was noticed early and she started rigorous training under a series of teachers. Her mother�s ambition brought them to Mumbai to try her hand

at singing when she was just 10. Once in Mumbai they met Kalyanji-Anandji who found her too young and asked them to try again later. So they were back the next year. This time armed with a letter of recommendation they met Raj Kapoor who in turn sent them to meet Laxmikant-Pyarelal the famous music composer duo.

In early 1979 Alka got a chance to sing a few lines in Rajshri�s Payal Ki Jhankar. But her first full release proved to be the super hit �Mere angne mein� from Laawaris. But even though she got a lot of singing assignments after this number the next big hit proved to be elusive. All that changed with her song �Ek do teen� in Tezaab which gave a tremendous boost to both her and Madhuri Dixit�s career. There was no stopping her after that and it was for this song that she received her first Filmfare Award.
