Biography

The story goes that while reciting one of his ghazals at a gathering in Sultanpur Majrooh received so much appreciation that he decided poetry was his true calling.

His first breakthrough as a songwriter came in 1945 when he met film producer A. R. Kardar at one of the mushairas. Though initially reluctant and unconvinced about the artistic possibility of film songs he was persuaded to write

lyrics on the grounds that it would be a lucrative occupation. Kardar consequently took him to Naushad. He was signed on as the lyricist of the film Shah Jehan (1946). This initial success continued in Andaaz and Arzoo. Throughout the 1950s Majrooh Sultanpuri was considered the most famous ghazal writer of the time along with Faiz Ahmed Faiz. However some of his most popular works are those done in collaboration with writer-turned-director Nasir Hussain a partnership that began with Paying Guest and continued in Teesri Manzil and through many more big hits of the day. It was during this period of intense creativity that the duo became a legendary trio with R. D. Burman joining them.

Majrooh Sultanpuri�s political convictions and his open affiliation with the left earned him the ire of the establishment and in 1949 he was put behind bars along with other activists like Balraj Sahni. Probably the grimness of these tough years in the poet�s life are reflected in the sombre lines : �Ek din bik jayega maati ke mol�.

Surprisingly his art was not sufficiently rewarded in his lifetime. After suffering a severe attack of pneumonia he passed away on 24 May 2000 at the advanced age of 80 leaving behind works immortalized by a lyrical flamboyance.
