Biography

Kazi Nazrul Islam fondly known as the rebel poet of Bengali literature was the creator of the eponymous lyric genre Nazrulgeeti. He was the second son of Kazi Fakir Ahmed.

Nazrul�s childhood days were spent battling abject poverty and personal misfortunes. His father died when he was just 10 and consequently to sustain himself he had to undergo much drudgery. His education was interrupted

time and again. However the local village school he attended and the local culture of Churulia village made him familiar with the theological precepts of Islam and that left a strong mark in his early as well as mature works. From 1917 to 1920 he served as a soldier in the Indian Army - a crucial chapter in his life as many of the songs and poems of his early years were unmistakably charged with a militant ethos. His first published poem Freedom was printed in the July 1919 issue of a magazine called Bangiya Musalman Sahitya Patrika. Around this time he also started regularly subscribing to the leading literary periodicals published from Calcutta like Prabasi Bharatbarsha Bharati Saogat and others. It was a time in Bengali literature when a generation of writers was trying to bring in more prosaic and mundane themes than those found in Tagore and his contemporaries. Kazi Nazrul Islam�s poems were direct angry and invigorating yet they were gifted with a lyrical grace. They were candid protests against oppression - slavery communalism feudalism and colonialism - and soon the poet was hailed as the harbinger of a new sort of modernity in Bengali literature.

Nazrul�s first love for a lady named Nargis remained unconsummated and the event found sublime expression in many of his melancholic poems and songs. He married Pramila Devi a member of the Brahmo Samaj (a reformist socio-religious sect which originated in 19th century Bengal) in 1924 and the couple relocated to Hooghly. Around this time Nazrul published Bisher Banshi an anthology of poems and Bhangar Gaan an anthology of songs that are till date the most widely read of his works. His other significant works include Byather Dan (The Gift of Sorrow) Agnibeena (Fire Lute) and Yugbani (Sermon of the Epoch). For a while he also served as the joint editor of the magazine Nabayug along with Muzaffar Ahmed. He joined HMV in 1928 as a lyricist composer and trainer and the four years during which he served in that capacity mark a prolific period in his life. He was also associated with the newly formed Indian Broadcasting Company. Kazi Nazrul Islam notably worked as a music director in the filmed version of Tagore�s novel Gora and Sachin Sengupta�s stage play Sirajuddoula. On Calcutta Radio he used to supervise the critical research-oriented programmes like Haramoni and Navaraga-malika.

In many ways Kazi Nazrul Islam epitomized the persona of an artist engag�. Alongside his literary pursuits he was always at the centre of major political upheavals of his day. Due to their inflammatory and seditious nature many of his works were subject to political bans and confiscation during British rule.

Sometime around 1942 the poet fell seriously ill and gradually lost his power of speech. Despite many efforts in India and abroad he did not recover and spent the final 34 years of his life in enforced silence. He passed away on 29 August 1976. After the birth of independent Bangladesh Nazrul Islam was chosen as the national poet of that country.
