Biography

A stalwart among the Malayalam music directors Govindan Devarajan was initially drawn to theatre music and made his stage debut in a classical concert at the age of 18. In his youth he was attracted to Communist ideology and joined the famous Kerala People�s Arts Club (KPAC). The organization provided a platform for his work as a music director for drama and he was recognized for the song �Ponnarivaal

ambiliye kanneriyunnoole�. In 1952 he produced another landmark � in the KPAC play Ningalenne Communistaakki written by Thoppil Bhaasi.

Devarajan made his debut in film music with the film Kaalam Maarunnu (1955). From the film Chathurangam (1959) onwards he tied up with lyricist Vayalar Ramavarma. Prominent Malayalam singers like K. J. Yesudas and Paliath Jayachandran who owe much of their success to the compositions of Devarajan consider him an inspiring figure.

In a unusually long career Devarajan has composed music for more than 300 Malayalam films many dramas 20 Tamil and four Kannada movies. Endowed with a great talent for synthesis he could churn out melodies with a seamless mix of Carnatic and Hindustani tunes. In some of his compositions the influence of folk music is apparent but they were always modified to fit in with a westernized orchestration. He composed a few devotional songs that refreshed the genre forever. The songs composed by the Vayalar-Devarajan combination form a large repertoire of nostalgia in Malayalam music.

He died on 14 March 2006 in Chennai.
