Honours and recognitions

She has received seventeen Maharashtra State Awards.
She received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema
She has received The Freddie Mercury Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts.
The Birmingham Film Festival paid her a special tribute in November 2002.
She was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India on Monday May 05 2008.

Biography

Asha Bhosle is the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar and together the two sisters have reigned over the music industry for several decades. Her father Dinanath Mangeshkar was a reputed musician and her initial training as a child was in classical music under him. However he died in 1942 when she was just nine years old and the family began to feel the financial pressure moving from Pune to Kolhapur

and then to Bombay.

Like her older sister Lata she too acted as a child artiste in a few films but with her talents playback singing was a natural choice of profession. Around the age of 10 she apparently sang her first film song in the Marathi film Majha Bal though she made her real playback debut in 1948 in the film Chunariya. However Asha�s journey to the top was a long and difficult one. Through the 1950s she sang more songs than any other playback singer but most of them were in small unknown films. Meanwhile Lata Mangeshkar Shamshad Begum and Geeta Dutt continued to be the singers who were in great demand.

1957 was her breakthrough year. O. P. Nayyar used her as the heroine�s voice in two films for which he did the music. In that year Lata fell out with music director S. D. Burman while Geeta Dutt�s troubled marriage interfered with her career. S. D. Burman and O. P. Nayyar turned to Asha and the following year she made it right to the top with hit songs in films like Howrah Bridge (1958) Chalti ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and Lajwanti (1958).

Over the next three decades she proved her versatility and range with hit songs that covered the spectrum from sensuous dance numbers to soulful ghazals. She has sung in virtually every Indian language as well as in Russian and Malay. She has sung Rabindra Sangeet (the Bengali songs of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore) and performed with the bhangra group Alaap the Indian rap act Baba Sehgal and Boy George the British pop icon amongst others. In the 1990s she successfully created a new audience with her Indipop albums. If there is one thing she has shown it is that she is capable of reinventing herself with her zest for experimentation and willingness to try new things.
