Biography

P.B Sreenivos is a hugely popular lyricist and singer from the south. Sreenivos� parentage played a big part in his development as a singer; his mother was a well-trained singer with a sonorous voice. However Sreenivos did not enjoy the traditional method of training associated with Carnatic music and gravitated towards film songs from a young age. He convinced himself that for an artist to excel in

the field of playback music instead of undergoing training in classical music learning from the masters of film music is a wiser choice.

In 1952 his father took him to Gemini Studio to show him the world of cinema. Veena exponent Yemini Sankara Shastri and co-music director B. S Kalaa gave Sreenivos a chance to sing in a Hindi film Mr Sampath the remake of a Tamil film Miss Malini.

It was G. K. Venkat who introduced Sreenivos to Dr. Rajkumar insisting that Sreenivos had a good voice and should be given a chance to sing. Kokilaswarar was the first film in which he sang for Rajkumar and from the film Bhakta Kanakadasa onwards Sreenivos became the regular playback singer for Dr. Rajkumar. Since then he has sung almost 200 songs for Rajkumar.

P. Sreenivos� artistic identity would be incomplete without considering his literary works. He has written poetry in eight languages and is the author of a few books on poetics: Sandhas Sreenivasa Gatathri Vritham and Dasa Geetha Geetha Sandesham.

In December 2001 he was appointed president of the Iyal Isai Nataka Manram. He is a recipient of an honourable doctorate degree from Arizona University.
