Biography

After completing his secondary education Mukesh worked briefly for the Delhi Department of Public Works. His early interest was in theatre and he acted in many plays before he took to singing. The story goes that Mukesh's voice was noticed by one of his distant relatives named Motilal a popular actor in Hindi films when he sang at his sister�s wedding. Mukesh eventually came to Bombay and started taking

music lessons. He started his career in films not as a singer but as an actor as he was cast in a role in a Hindi film Nirdosh (1941).

In 1945 he got his break as a playback singer with the film Pehli Nazar. In 1948 in the film Aag he lent his voice for the first time to a character played by Raj Kapoor. This would mark the beginning of a bond which would make each the other�s alter ego in the popular imagination. Following Awaara's success Mukesh decided to pursue acting - to try and make it as a singing star. But Mashuqa (1953) with Suraiya and Anuraag (1956) with Usha Kiron both sank at the box-office. He also did a small role as a tangewala enacting his own song 'Choti si Zindagani' in Aah (1953).

When he returned to playback he found the offers scarce. Those were hard times for him and his family. Finally he had a hit with 'Yeh mera diwanapan hai' in Yahudi (1958). Other hits that year like Madhumati Parvarish and Phir Subah Hogi followed. Thereafter he flourished right upto the mid-70s with hits like 'Main to kk khwab hoon' (Himalay ki God Mein 1965) 'Jeena yahaan marna yahaan' (Mera Naam Joker) 'Maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne chune' and 'Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye (Anand 1970) 'Main na bhoolonga' (Roti Kapda Aur Makan 1974) and of course 'Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon' and 'Kabhi kabhie (Kabhi Kabhie 1976).

Mukesh pioneered a crisp and unadorned style of singing. His voice held a strain of melancholy reminiscent of K. L. Saigal. The innate pathos of the voice made him the ideal singer for many unforgettable roles with introspective character traits.

He died of a heart attack on 27 August 1976 in Detroit Michigan USA while on a concert tour. At the news of his demise Raj Kapoor sadly remarked �I have lost my voice.�

After Mukesh's death his unreleased songs began to be released in 1977 with films like Dharam Veer Amar Akbar Anthony Khel Khilari Ka Darinda and Chandi Sona. From 1980 onward Mukesh's voice could be heard in many late films like Shaitan Mujarim (1980) Premika Patthar Se Takkar (1980) Sanjh Ki Bela (1981) Maila Anchal (1981) Aarohi (1982) Chor Mandali (1983) Nirlaj (1985) Love and God (1986) Shubh Chintak (1989) and his last known release Chand Grahan (1997).

Mukesh left behind a treasure house of 1500 songs including the eight volume rendition of the Tulsi Ramayana which is played every morning in Mukesh Chowk near his residence.
