Sonu Niigaam, Classically Mild

Listening to the new Sonu Niigaam CD, Classically Mild, was a wonderful and in some ways a surprising experience, especially for someone like me, who is not very fond of the current commercial hindi film music or Indi-Pop.

It would not be right to label or categorize the compositions as semi-classical or fusion or anything else. I think this music is beyond categorization or labels. It has a global essence or spirit about it. The composition and music arrangement is like a ‘moist smooth blend’ of styles, without any of the jagged edges so frequently associated with fusion music. It just effortlessly envelops and surrounds you. Listening to it is an ethereal experience.

Sonu Niigaam, Classically Mild

Sonu Niigaam has surpassed himself. Though his singing ability was never in question, this album reveals a totally different side of his singing talent. The composition, mixing, and delivery, reaches beyond cultural borders. It takes you on a roller coaster ride of a myriad emotions and range of instruments and styles, all expertly woven together to deliver this amazing experience.

The music has a soul stirring quality about it which embeds itself in your emotions in a spiritual way. It touched me at all three levels of mind, heart and soul. The music does not require any cerebral analysis, just enjoy it and allow its energy to be absorbed by the soul.

I just loved it. This is music that I can never get tired of listening to, over and over again.
